Impressionism as a style developed in France in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The name derives from a satirical review of Claude Monet’s work ‘Impression’ by critic Louis Leroy. The movement is best known for rendering reality by employing the transitional properties of light and color. As with most art movements, the early practitioners were considered rebels and radicals, who moved away from emphasis on lines, contours and figures in favor of more free brush strokes. Many artists even painted outdoors to achieve more realistic depictions of life. Still lifes and landscapes took precedence over religious and mythological work.
Impressionism’s roots can be traced back to 1860 when a group of artists, including luminaries like Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir discovered their shared love for outdoor painting. Their artworks, however, were met with scorn and never won accolades at the Académie des Beaux-Arts, the premier art school in France at the time. After years of rejection, the group decided to hold their own exhibition in 1873 to mixed reviews. They would go on to host 8 more up to 1886. Our impressionism poster is a tribute to all the rebels who choose to defy rules and challenge authority.
